As usual, Connect was really good like every year but there are always
a few things that stand out. A highlight for me was the zip wire. It was higher and longer than last year but still just as scary. I’m not a good person with heights as many of my friends will know. It feels good doing things you are scared of. Another highlight of mine is the 3G Swing, although I burnt my fingers from the rope quite badly it was still really good. While I got in the chair thing for it with Lozy, the rest of my group (Team Ben which was the best group!) were pulling us up. When the guy working there told them to stop, we had to pull a rope to let us go. Finally, we let go of it and we just dropped and swung. The drop is quite terrifying, all the girls screamed as we do and of course the guys kept it in and were very manly about it all.

Also I really liked the talks this year. I hope Mike is reading this…he’s quite a cool guy who should really stay away from fireworks. His talks are inspiring and really made me think. Overall, Connect Weekend Away was really good and I hope next year’s will be just as good, especially as it will be last year next time!

Sometimes I encounter somebody with real talent and skill doing something that I just can’t comprehend. Sometimes I’m blown away by their ability. Well so it was at the beginning of the Connect Weekend Away mid-way through October. Those who went will know exactly who I’m talking about... yes, that’s right, Steve the coach driver. A man who demonstrated his credentials while still at St Peter’s by parallel parking his coach into a space only cms bigger than the coach itself. A man who delivered us safe and sound to Blackwell Adventure Centre in Bromsgrove despite having to battle against poor directions, incredibly narrow roads and 35 teenagers in the back asking ‘are we there yet’ Steve’s reversing ability, down narrow roads with only cameras to guide him, truly was a site to behold. Steve, we salute you.

Personal highlights include the leader’s dominance of the 3 a side football that was played on Saturday, the superbly spicy Chilli that we ate on Friday night, the hilarious blindfolded obstacle course and that 5-0 scoreline. All in all the weekend was a great time to get to know each other better and  have fun with activities like the 3G-swing (imagine a normal swing, then picture it 10 times bigger and you’ll have some idea).

Soul Survivor 09

ss095

ss091 I will remember Soul Survivor 2009 for three things; the sun, cricket and crashing out of the football tournament in the first round. Although it was hard to take being beaten in the first round, it turned out to be a good thing for me; where last year I had consistently missed the seminars I wanted to go to because of football matches, this year I could get to those seminars.

The seminars were great for feeding and challenging my thoughts about God. Two seminars in particular that stick out were the question and answer sessions led by Michael Ramsden, he was so good at answering literally any question about God, life, the world or anything!

I had such a good time at Soul Survivor 2009, the 5 days of seminars, cricket, morning meetings, more cricket, evening meetings, late night worship and football left me utterly exhausted (I don’t think I’ve done that much exercise in years!) but changed and challenged to live life to the max for God.

Rwanda 2009
(Hannah Janes)

So much went on in Rwanda it’s hard to condense it down into 2 paragraphs, but here goes! During our first week in Rwanda we spent most of the mornings building a house for a widow named Margaret and her children. The house was made out of bamboo and lots of mud and although the work was quite tiresome, Margaret was extremely grateful of the work we were doing.  When she was asked if she liked the house, she even did a little dance for us! I think that made it all worthwhile for everyone. During the afternoons of the first week we did a lot of visiting to different groups of people. For example one afternoon we visited a HIV/aids group. Although it was quite hard to see people obviously living in quite a lot of pain, their faith in Jesus was excellent to see. I think it really encouraged everyone. We also visited a children’s club on one afternoon which was very fun. There were loads of kids and we got the chance to sing to them and also the drama group got a chance to perform a drama to them.

During the second week on some of the mornings we ran a children’s club. We performed dramas for them and sang songs with them and played lots of games with them. It was a lot of fun and the children really enjoyed us being there. Also during the second week we visited places like (Nugeme) forest and a tea factory. The forest was very beautiful to walk around and it was very interesting to see how tea was made. Also during the week we visited a genocide memorial site in Murambi which was a secondary school site where many people were killed. It was very hard to be there and I don’t think anyone will forget it. At the end of the week on our last day we went to the Bishop’s house to say goodbye to everyone. We all made lots of new friends and had such an amazing experience it was quite hard to say goodbye. It was a great trip and I definitely think everyone wants to go back again!
